Water, Our Farmers and Their Regions

Chaired by Cotton Australia General Manager and water specialist Michael Murray, this session will focus on the all-important topic of water, what’s changing and how it will affect farmers and their regions.

“Water policy and methods of implementation are constantly changing. We are hoping that in this session growers will gain a much better understanding of the Government’s plans for water policy, and the potential impacts on their businesses and communities,” Michael said.

“Key topics in the mix are cultural water which is likely to be a major focus of the next decade, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and new technologies and innovations available to water regulators,” he said.

Phil Duncan, a Kamilaroi man and water policy advisor based in Moree, will explain what indigenous water is and isn’t, why it’s important to Aboriginal people, and how first nations people can participate in the irrigation industry.

Chief Executive of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, Andrew McConville, will provide insights into the final implementation of the current Basin Plan as we move towards its review in 2026 and 2027. Following the passing of the Restore the River Bill last year, delegates will hear the latest thinking on how this may be implemented, with a focus on early insights into the Basin Plan Review process.
